OUR ELDERS

Doug Burns
was appointed an elder in February of 2009.
He was born in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee on February 20 and is
the oldest of five children born to Franklin and Annette Burns. Doug is a
graduate of Vanderbilt University with a Masters Degree in Health Care
Administration. He has worked at Vanderbilt since 1990. He is married to Gina
Sandusky Burns who is a graduate of UT and MTSU and is a school administrator in
the Lawrence County school system. Gina is the daughter of the late John Thomas
and Joan Sandusky. Doug and Gina have two children. Lindsay Burns Cranston is a
graduate of Lipscomb University and Evan Burns is a graduate of
Freed-Hardeman University. Lindsay lives in Nashville with her husband, Drew
Cranston, while Evan now serves as a youth minister and lives in Florence, AL. Doug enjoys boating, water sports, and spending time
on the farm. Gina also enjoys boating, water sports, and gardening. Doug served
as a Deacon at Pulaski Street until February, 2009.
Mack
Evans was appointed an elder in March of 1997.
Mack
oversees
the Edification and Evangelism programs at Pulaski Street. He was born
in Wayne County, TN on September 12. His parents, Geraldine "Gerry" Evans
and the late Buford Evans, were raised in Five Points, TN. Mack is one of
six children. He grew up in Lawrence County, attended Lawrenceburg Public
school and graduated from LCHS in 1971. Mack played basketball on the last
boys' LCHS team to make it to the state finals! He attended Martin Methodist and
the University of Tennessee for Health Sciences in Memphis in order to become a
pharmacist. He co-owns Liberty Drug Store where he works. Shirley was born
in Gibson County, TN on November 23, one of five children. Her
parents are Malcolm DeLoach and June Goodrich Hawks. Shirley graduated
from North Side High School in Jackson, TN and attended Jackson State Community
College and UT for Health Sciences (Memphis). There Shirley became a
dental hygienist and met Mack Evans. They married on July 17, 1976 in
Jackson, TN. The late Brother D. Ellis Walker performed the ceremony.
Mack and Shirley have three children, Jacob (and wife, Brittany) of Maryville,
TN, Seth of Nashville, TN, and Emily Bruce (and husband Robbie) of Nashville.
Son Jacob is a minister of the gospel at the Greenback Church of Christ in
Greenback, TN.
Tim Hammond
was appointed an elder in February of 2009. He was born in Detroit,
Michigan on June 8 and reared in Lawrence County from age three on a farm in
Bonnertown, TN. His home congregation was the Lexington, Alabama Church of
Christ on the south side of town where he was baptized in 1969. After graduating
from Lexington High School in 1976, Tim attended Freed-Hardeman College for 3
years and received A.A. degrees in Biology and Chemistry. His B.S. degree was
completed at MTSU in 1980. His future bride, Dawn Carnahan, daughter of Lewis and
Julia Carnahan, was born April 27 and grew up in Nashville. Tim and Dawn married
in 1981, and they moved to Lawrenceburg in June of 1983 after Tim earned his DVM
degree at UTCVM in Knoxville. They welcomed a daughter, Heather, in 1988 and a
son, Ethan, in 1992. They have both taught in the Bible school program at
Pulaski Street. Tim served here as a deacon from 1990 through 2008. Dawn has
worked as one of the church secretaries from 1989-1993 and 1996 to present. Tim
and Dawn live in the Leoma community. Tim works at his veterinary clinic in
Loretto. He enjoys golfing and reading with an occasional hunting or fishing
outing. Dawn enjoys cooking, flower gardening, and decorating.
J. Fred Johnston
was appointed an elder in November of
1984.
He
oversees
the Finance and Facilities programs at Pulaski Street. He was born on September
23 in Loretto, TN. His parents were Lawrence and Viola Johnston.
J. Fred graduated from Loretto High School and attended Martin Methodist
College. He then served his country in the army, stationed in Germany. J. Fred
has retired from Murray, Inc. and is still very active in Racking Horse
training and competing. (He has trained and shown two world champion
Racking Horses!) Barbara was born on June 7 in West Point, TN. Her
parents were Frank and Reba Moore Casteel. She graduated from Loretto High
School and received her associate degree from Columbia State Community College
at the age of 51. She retired from Bank Of America in 2001. J. Fred
enjoys golf, fishing and horse shows. Barbara enjoys reading, going to the
beach and her grandchildren. Both enjoy traveling. J. Fred and Barbara
have two sons, Jeff (and wife Sandy) and Greg (and wife Vickie), four grandchildren, and a great grandchild.
Son Jeff is youth minister at the Ethridge Church of Christ.
Darrell Maggard was appointed an elder in February of 2009. He was
born in Wayne, MI on
September 25. His parents, Joe & Pauline Salisbury were
both raised in
Floyd County, KY. Darrell is the oldest of three children. He grew up in
Westland, MI, attended Wayne Memorial High School and graduated in 1978. Darrell worked for General Motors for 30 plus
years. Until his recent retirement, Darrell worked at the Spring Hill, Tennessee location as a UAW/GM
Joint Ergonomics Technician. Judy was born in Wayne, MI on February 19, one of
three children. Her parents are Greer Parker and the late Betty Jo (Bee) Parker.
Judy graduated from Annapolis High School in Dearborn Heights, MI in 1980.
Darrell & Judy both grew up at the Garden City church of Christ congregation in
Garden City, Michigan. They married on June 28, 1980. Darrell and Judy have
three children, son Dustin (and his wonderful wife, Amanda), son Shawn (and his
wonderful new bride, Tori) of Florence, AL, and daughter Ashley of Lawrenceburg.
They also have two adorable granddaughters, Lindsay and Madison Maggard
(children of Dustin and Amanda). Darrell enjoys riding his Harley,
golf, and watching hockey. Judy enjoys landscaping, flower gardening, being a
passenger on the motorcycle and most of all, being “Nana” to their
granddaughters.
Bob Markus
was appointed an elder in March of 1997.
Bob
oversees the
Edification and Evangelism programs at Pulaski Street. He was
born on November 3 in Lawrence County. His parents were Fred and Louise Markus.
Bobby graduated from LCHS and from MTSU with a degree in Business
Management. He served his country during the Vietnam War with the army.
Bob founded Markus Insurance Agency in 1969 and is still employed there.
Linda was born on August 2 in Lawrence County. Her parents are the late
Leo and Viva Lee (Hendrix)
Peppers. She graduated from LCHS and from MTSU with a degree in Home
Economics. She has operated
Linda Markus Specialty Advertising for several years. Bob and Linda have
two daughters, Mindy Markus Janssen and her husband, Matt, (Lawrenceburg) and Mitzi Fann
and her husband, Brian, (Mount
Pleasant) and two beautiful granddaughters.
Eric Nutt
was appointed an elder in February of 2009.
He was born on December 31 in Knoxville,
TN. His parents are Howard and Jeannette Nutt. Eric attended
Humboldt High School in Humboldt, TN, where he played football and ran track. He
also attended Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville and the
University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He is employed by Rogers Group
Incorporated as construction manager. Eric has served as a deacon at Pulaski
Street, leads singing, teaches classes, and helps coordinate VBS. Eric and
Melanie, high school sweethearts, married on September 3, 1983. Melanie
has worked as one of the church secretaries here at Pulaski Street since 1998.
Her parents are Paul and Bernice Cole of Humboldt. Eric and Melanie have
four children: Sarah Jane (and husband Jacob Cothren) of Lawrenceburg, Rachel,
attending MTSU in Murfreesboro, and Trevor and Aimee, both LCHS students.
Eric enjoys sports, hunting, reading, playing guitar, and music of all kinds.
Melanie likes to read, sing, cook, plant flowers, and enjoys computers.
